PURIFICATION
Visiting the Hammam, often located near mosques, was to undergo a purification process to cleanse both body and soul. Public bathing was essential due to a lack of plumbing inside homes and the Hammam were a true social epicentre. Men and women had separate bath houses and although were nude inside the hot rooms, clothing was required in other areas.
The ritual typically consists of a hot steam bath and whole of body exfoliation before a final rinse.
